Taking Design Beyond With Alec Wang

meInnovation and design go hand in hand, and the perfect example of this is Alec Wang. All the way from Korea, Alec talked to us about what it takes to become a designer in his home country and the relevance of presentation design.

What makes presentation design so special? At Alec’s company, it’s not only about pretty looking presentations, it’s about the strategy of a presentation and how it is actually useful for a presenter. It’s about educating people on how a presentation should be done. But anyway, I won’t give away too much info. Here is what Alec had to say to us:

Why are you a designer?

Well, in order to enter a design college in Korea, students have to learn and pass a test on design and design from junior high or high school.
I had a high interest in arts when I was little and started to get educated on what it takes to be a designer since my high school years. This paved the way for me to become a designer.

How would you describe your design style?

I started a Presentation company 12 years ago. You may not be familiar with ‘a presentation company’ so let me explain.

What we do is provide services to help those who have to prepare and execute a presentation. The services we provide include strategic planning, design, presentation coaching and education. Our services are to solve issues in full ranges as far as presentations are concerned.

Presentation design is different from general graphic design in terms of methods of expression. General graphic design lets audiences or readers pick up information directly through media.

However, during a presentation, a presenter becomes the hero of delivering information and visual materials become a presenter’s supporter.
Presentation designs we create must contain a presenter’s purpose and intention of speech clearly. In order to do so, turning data into information to meet the intention of a presenter must be the top priority.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Usually through other designers and their designs. Looking through sites like Pinterest, Behance and Dribbble help me get inspired. In Korea, notefolio.net or grafolio.com is useful.

Do you have a favorite quote? If yes, what is it?

“Our job is to bring the dead facts to life” by William Bernbach.

Who are some of your favorite designers that inspired you the most?

I like designers with philosophy. Milton Glaser who created ‘I love New York’ is one of my favorite designers. And, you may not know him but another designer I admire is Sangsoo Ahn in Korea.

What would you like to achieve in the next few years?

I am working on creating an independent presentation community site by integrating know-how from operating a presentation company for the last 12 years. My goal is to communicate with people worldwide through this site and presentation and present related design. I hope this community site becomes famous worldwide.

What advice do you have for other upcoming design members of Designs.net?

I believe design source markets will continue to grow. I hope they create a different variety of contents that can appeal to one’s own design color that is different from others.
